Most people think of smorrebrod as something typically Danish. However, the concept of open faced sandwiches is not of Danish origin. But it is particularly in Denmark, that we do love the festive high plated smorrebrod.

One of the first high plated smorrebrod origins from Copenhagen, where the historic restaurant, Nimb,
who presented their open faced sandwiches as early as 1883. At Ambassaden & Konsulatet, we honor the traditions and serve a wide selection of the classic Danish smorrebrod in Østerbro.

We have given some of our high plated smorrebrod a modern twist, which makes the dishes a bit different and contemporary. We recommend our delicious creamy chicken salad on white bread, followed by a tenderloin steak with mushrooms á la crème, when you are hungering for Danish smorrebrod in Copenhagen Ø. If that is not enough for you, then you can start with a few small plates from our selection of herrings.

Danish smorrebrod with local ingredients and animal welfare

Ambassaden & Konsulatet serves Danish smorrebrod with focus on local, organic ingredients. The pork meat that we use for our spare rib roast and tenderloin steaks comes from the meat merchanter Spis min Gris on Østerbro, which is recommend by the Danish organic community, Økologisk Landsforening.

For us the use of local ingredients for our smorrebrod on Østerbro means, that we pass on, an honest and quality conscious food culture, to our guests.

Herring dishes

We are excited about herring. And about fish… and about shellfish. Therefore, we have reserved an entire page in our menu to delicious seafood, so you can enjoy appetizing dishes of herrings and an ice-cold aquavit. You decide, how much smorrebrod you need to satisfy your appetite. Usually two to four dishes will do for most people

Many start with the herring, when they order smorrebrod at us in Copenhagen. Have a look at the selection of plates for the grand herring buffet. Or simply choose one dish of either old fashioned spicy herring, old fashioned marinated herring, curry herring, or pepper herring, before you move on to the warm smorrebrod, when you are enjoying a tasteful lunch in Copenhagen Ø.
